Manage Inventory Catalog Items

Overview

Use Inventory Catalog to maintain item availability and navigate into item-level details before assigning assets to students.

Prerequisites

  • Opening /InventoryManagement/Index requires the inventory.read permission. Only District Admin, School Admin, Power User, and Support ReadOnly roles have this permission by default; other staff roles (including Teacher, Cashier, Staff, and Registrar) do not have access to this page at all and will see Access Denied.
  • Create/edit/delete actions additionally require the inventory.manage permission, granted by default only to District Admin and School Admin.

Step-by-step Procedure

  1. Open /InventoryManagement/Index.
  2. In Filters, enter search text in Title, serial, status....
  3. Select Search to apply filters, or Reset to clear filters.
  4. Select Add Inventory Item to create a new catalog record.
  5. Review table columns:
    • Title
    • Amount
    • Balance
    • Actions
  6. Use row Actions to open item Details, Edit, or Delete (as permitted).
  7. When ready to assign items, go to Student Asset Assignment from sidebar link or open /StudentAssets/Index.

Variations / Branching Flows

  • Read-only role (inventory.read without inventory.manage, e.g. Power User or Support ReadOnly):

You can search and view details, but create/edit/delete controls are hidden.

  • No inventory.read permission (e.g. Teacher):

The page is not accessible at all — you'll be redirected to Access Denied rather than seeing a read-only view.

  • Section scope updates:

If section scope changes, the page reloads and data refreshes automatically.

Expected Outcomes

  • Inventory list reflects current search filters.
  • Catalog CRUD actions are available according to role permissions.
  • Items are ready for student assignment workflows.

Troubleshooting / Edge Cases

  • No rows returned: clear search text and re-run Search.
  • Unexpected balances: verify item activity and assignment history in details view.
  • Missing action buttons: role has inventory.read but lacks inventory.manage.
  • Access Denied on /InventoryManagement/Index: role lacks inventory.read entirely — this is expected for non-admin/non-Power User staff roles, not a bug.
